Lodgepole pine
Traditionally, lodgepole pine has been used by the pulp industry, but at Gällö Timber, we have specialized in extracting sawn timber from lodgepole pine.
Usefull in Many Ways
Lodgepole pine, with its North American origins, was introduced in Sweden during the 1970s. With its ability to quickly reach harvest maturity, it provides an increased supply of timber raw material and enhances carbon dioxide uptake.
For SCA and Gällö Timber, lodgepole pine represents a sustainable alternative in their range of products. Thanks to a higher proportion of sound knots with longer knot spacing, a lighter color compared to pine, and lower density, lodgepole pine is suitable for specialized applications within the wood industry, particularly in panel and glued-laminated board production.
Heat treatment, a process where the wood is heated to around 200 degrees Celsius, also produces rot-resistant products without chemical additives.
Facts
Pinus Contorta
Origin:
Established by SCA in the 1950s. Originally from North America, it was introduced in Sweden for its ability to quickly reach harvest maturity and increase the supply of timber raw material.
Rapid Growth:
Reaches harvestable age 40% faster than Swedish pine species.
Environmental Impact:
Contributes to an increase in carbon dioxide uptake – estimated at approximately 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide uptake per year on SCA's land.
Applications:
Attractive for the manufacture of knot-free products, moldings, carpentry, and furniture industries. Potential for producing rot-resistant products after heat treatment.
Production Goal:
Aim to increase the production of sawn timber to up to 200,000 cubic meters within five years.
